Have you seen it? if not, lemme give you that opportunity right now...

Don't forget to make your way over to D. Miles' profile and let him know what you think!

  • I Doubt Anyone Noticed...

    2011-03-30 23:47 / 会员可以看

The date on my last blog was September 2010. Most of the time, at this point, people start apologizing for not blogging. I'm not gonna. Why? I haven't done anything wrong and I've nothing to feel guilty about. *shrug*

I haven't really done anything all that notable since September. Now that I think about it, I don't remember a lot of last fall. Don't worry, it's not becuz of some horrible accident

I'd known for several years that I had a sleep disorder. I just didn't know how bad it was. Things I experienced I wrote off as hormonal or just another part of my quirky personality. I had no idea sleep deprivation was a science unto itself until it landed me in the office of a Neurologist specializing in Sleep Medicine. Apparently what I have is quite rare in women of my age group and build--I'm kind of a little person--but there I sat in a waiting room surrounded by the elderly and morbidly obese. Not getting good sleep is serious business. But, that's a whole other blog...

Anyway, here's a few(?)pics to get everyone caught up:

For his second birthday, my nephew was given a beagle-chihuahua mix puppy. Is there a "designer breed" name for that combination? chibeagle... beaghuahua... chigle? Eh... Anyhoo, his name is Jo-Jo.

Jo-Jo came over for a play date. Trinity wanted nothing to do with the pup, but Dash was thrilled to have someone to play with.

    everyone gets acquainted via sniffing...
Dash discovered being bigger isn't necessarily better when your opponent has needly puppy teeth and goes for your ankles then ears

In October, we took our Annual Orchard Tour (there's a link at that blog to the previous year too)
    freshly harvested...
    all important cider and donuts
the discovery that bees not only prefer chocolate donut frosting over other flavors of donut frosting, but, also, that bees have tongues!

I began my preparations for Christmas with some plasters painting.
I think they turned out pretty good   I sprayed it with a triple gloss clear coat that gives paint a glassy look.

October also produced some food porn...
Large Fuji apples (firm with a slightly sweet, tart flavor) dipped in caramel, then semi-sweet chocolate and rolled in toasted almonds.
a Rocky Road Brownie made with a very large marshmallow skull

Also, in October, was, of course Halloween. As is my tradition, I make my kids' costumes. I let them choose whatever they want to be, and I make it happen. This year was Princess Kitana and a sniper.
    girl-child sure is getting big...

boy-child is in this picture, you just have to find him...
    ...and in this one.
this one makes it a lot easier.
There he is! That's a homemade ghillie suit! And, yes, he did wear it out hunting a few times after.

    BUT

Before Halloween happened, I did have a somewhat horrible accident...

I'd never cooked with a fresh pumpkin before and wanted to try my hand at it so, while on our Orchard Tour, I bought a cooking pumpkin. I found a soup recipe I wanted to try. It required me to decapitate, clean out and chop up part of the pumpkin raw (as opposed to oven baking and scooping out the insides like a squash). Best tool for the job is a heavy cleaver, right?

Worked well till the pumpkin slipped...

(WARNING: the next photos are a bit on the gory side...)

    so much for my manicure
    we called it "Frankenfinger"

    after the stitches came out

I went half-way though the middle finger on my right hand--thankful to be left-handed

The cleaver stopped when it hit the bone. Yeah, I not only cut it "real good," I broke it too

The day after the accident, I knew, if I didn't "get back on the horse," I'd never pick up that cleaver again. So I went back at that pumpkin!
Yes, I finish making the pumpkin soup

Adding insult to (severe) injury, it wasn't very good
      Soooooo, I
     made sweet revenge!

I roasted and ate the "children of my foe"

    and made a pumpkin cake!

I'm happy to report, Frankenfinger, though still a little scared and a wee bit numb on the end, has made a full recovery

See? Three months later (pic taken in January 2011), you can barely tell!

November saw the beginning of Michigan's annual great deer harvest and, of course, Thanksgiving.

December will need to be a separate blog. Rhett and I took the wee-people to Disney World in Florida and there's several 100 pictures
And, yeah, I have a bit of food porn from Christmas to share too...

December also brought a loss from which I doubt I will ever recover... My heart hurts...

  • Summer Road Trip - Part 2: Oriental ≠Asian

    2010-09-12 6:06 / 会员可以看

We spent the second day of our trip to Chicago at a museum. The Oriental Institute Museum can be found on the campus of the University of Chicago. The entrance fee is a donation and, if you like old stuff, ancient eastern nation's history or ever spent any time in Sunday School, you'll find it extremely interesting...

First, I should explain my title up there. When most people say "oriental" --at least here in the U.S. anyway--they think rugs and vases that come from somewhere in Asia. By definition, "oriental" means "of or pertaining to or characteristic of the East." And, in the case of this museum, it mean Egypt, Syria, Iran and more of what we now refer to as "the Middle East."

Anyway, there was tons of cool stuff if you're into the above mentioned kind of thing. I took lotsa pictures....

Wish I'd gotten something in the picture for scale.
    Up the nose shot!
    mooned by a statue too...

This was one of  the coolest thing at the museum. It's small, stone obelisk (below) depicting a story that's also recorded in the Bible!  In 2 Kings 19, a battle between Israel and Assyria is chronicled ...and it was here--right in the museums!--too!

"That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there." 2 Kings 19:35-36

One "small" difference though. The artifact's version is told from the Assyrian point of view. They chalked their 185,000 men, middle of the night defeat by deaths to mice and disease

A "clock." Filled with water in the morning, one knew what time it was by the water level becuz the water ran out at a steady rate though all those holes.

    Stone "carpet."

Misc. statues of an ancient king. See that white one there in the middle?

Yea, this one. I thought he looked like a nightlight

    Ancient "Striding Lion" tile wall.
Ancient "Striding Lion" tile wall observer (aka girl-child)...
Ancient "Striding Lion" tile wall toucher(!) Her exact words and she put her finger on that sign, "Touch *gigggle*"

Giant  ancient god statue dude with girl-child and boy-child (blurred for security and paranoia) for scale...
    Another up the nose shot.

Seals. This was another one of the super cool things at the museum. Especially if you ever spent any time in Sunday School. Go re-read Genesis 38. The part where Tamar and Judah and negotiating and they say:
"So she said, “Will you give me a pledge till you send it?”
Then he said, “What pledge shall I give you?”
So she said, “Your signet and cord, and your staff that is in your hand.”
These are examples of the signet she asked for! They were a very distinctive seal. Men carried them with them all the time and, when they sealed something with their signet, it was the equivalent of us signing our name to something today!

These next two were the other really cool thing (for me) at the museum. In Exodus 34, the Israelite  people have just been freed from Egypt. A little way down the road, Moses goes up on Mount Sinia to have a one-on-one with God. This was when God gave him the law and the original 10 Commandments tablets. While Moses was up there, God said to him, "Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.... Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and... Do not worship any other god..."

If you remember how the rest of the story goes, you know the Israelite people didn't exactly all do what they were told ...and here, in real life, straight out of ancient history was the proof! Wooooooooooooooow!  Not one, but two of the Canaanite god statues they were suppose to destroy!

    More temple statues...

    Humungo sized Tutankhamun
    Egyptian knick knacks

Wouldn't be an Egyptian exhibit with out canopic jars...
    and a mummy!

giant bull head. The description said the missing horns would have been made out of something that deteriorated a loooooooooong time ago....

And a tale of one of our own in the gift shop?

My geeky family enjoyed the museum very much. From there we went to Greektown for lunch at the Parthenon. Greek food is my favorite and it's not often I get to have the real deal

Most of us have friend we know only from the internet. The last couple years, I've made a habit of contacting any of those online friends, if I'm gonna be in their town, and inviting them to meet me for a meal. This trip was no exception

This time around, I was pleased to make the acquaintance of Don Hyun Kiolbassa. Don is a wushu champion, corporate lawyer, CPA, motion capture guy for Mortal Kombat games, studied under Donnie Yen, trained in China with the Shaolin Monks and on and on and on... My family and I had a very enjoyable lunch, both becuz of the excellent food and the exceptional company. Don gives off a rare vibe like I've only ever felt a few times. He's got all these incredible credentials attached to his name, but what I was most impressed with was the fact that he didn't need them--his genuineness, just the God-given things that would have come with the "base model" Don. You knew you were in the presence of a good guy.

(and, yes ladies. He's as charming as he looks )

  • Just for Eric =D

    2010-07-08 11:19 / 会员可以看

A few months ago, our very own Eric Nakamura posted several blogs about his trip to Chicago. Included in those blogs were pictures from many places I have visited in Chicago as well. Imagine my excitement when I discovered a kindred spirit, a shared joy for...

    MOLD-A-RAMA!

Eric! Next time you're in Chicago, you gotta go to the Brookfield Zoo! They have new (or perhaps refurbished?) Mold-A-Rama machines! I came home with a bear and a lion I'd never seen before. Sadly, I was limited to two Mold-A-Ramas, but saw several more that I do not have and have never seen anywhere before!   FYI, if you're near the LA Zoo, they have a nifty kangaroo Mold-A-Rama there...

  • Summer Road Trip - Part 1

    2010-07-07 10:43 / 会员可以看

Chicago is only a three hour drive away. Becuz of all the great attractions and museums, etc. there, we try to get to Chicago at least once a year. This year's road trip was only a two day-- kinda short and sweet--but a lot of fun. I know, shut up Scarlett, get on with the picture...

    Oh all right...

My family reeeeeeeeally likes zoos so we default to zoo-ing of there's one in the area we are visiting.

SIDE NOTE: Someone needs to settle a dispute for me. Recently, a friend told me, "Asian people don't like zoos." I think he's out of his tree, but didn't argue. I think he just doesn't like zoos, himself, and wants me to believe it's a cultural thing. Soooooo my Asian friends, what say you!?

Anyhoo, this year, it was Brookfield Zoo, just outside of Chicago. And, very much like last years road trip and zoo visit, there seem to be an excess number of animals mooning me!

    rhino moon

emu moon... Quick story! There were young gals at the emu exhibit. They were suppose to tell us about the emus. My mother-in-law raises emu here in MI so we ended up telling them about the bird...including what hey taste like

    hippo moon

    ibex moon

    warthog moon

    ostrich moon

    okapi moon

    Canadian goose moon

    annnnnnnnnnnnnd elephant moon!

Fortunately, there were some other, less rude animals there too!

yay camels! Cept they were all hiding in the barn

I like alligators. Even when they're dead, they look happy

yes, it's OK for this bat to be crawling on the floor. How do I know? There was a sign that said "yes, it's OK for the bats to be crawling on the floor."

leave it to girl-child to find a zoo invader. Common North American Toad. Ironically, we spotted one of these on exhibit in the zoo later  Girl-child too the opportunity to show this little guy to a group of girls from a city community center, who were also visiting the zoo, before sending him on her merry toad way...

giraffe... the guy in the foreground was a bark licker...Either that or he though that tree was an all-day sucker

no idea. Girl-child insisted I take this picture, "becuz it's random!" She's random...

Brookflield's carousel has the coooooolest animals!!!

can't have zoo pics without lions

is my family the only ones who saw this sign and said, together, "hmmm... must be Italian..."?

    macaw kisses!

some blue bird whose name escapes me

ha! I love the look on this bears face. CAPTION TIME!

    Hi Miss Scarlett,

Thanks for your comment. Speaking of independent film, do you know about the Jaman or Drama Fever websites? If not, I'd say it's worth checking out, because they're great sources of diverse storytelling. Drama Fever hosts a lot of Korean dramas, but there's a section called, "Short Films" which has the independent content.

    Happy viewing!

Hope you had a good trip to LA. I haven't been there that much recently but hopefully next year I'll be down there working on some new projects. Right now I'm holed up finishing up recording some music and other stuff.
