I picked up the Iceman yesterday from Mimi. Here's a sneak peek with the hardware just put in place, not installed:

    YEEEAAAHHHHHHHH!!!

I can't wait to play "Rock You Like a Hurricane" on this guitar...

I have always been a big fan of Dear Jane, because they make music I like, and they're all very nice guys.

I first noticed them from watching a snippet of their video for 男兒當打交 in Times Square. I would randomly accost passersby, asking if they could tell me who the band was. That song was, and is, great.

Sadly, no one in Times Square could tell me who the band was.

Or maybe they just didn't want to talk to a sweaty gweilo.

Did I mention this was July of 2005?

I met them in December of that year, and we became friends. As busy as I am, it is often months before I get to see them in person, but we run into each other at gigs like Let's Fight and the Converse MOOV show.

I always enjoy hanging out with them and acting like musicians do; making fun of everything, including ourselves, and generally laughing as much as we can.

I suppose it helps that Howie lived in Canada and Tim in the USA. I admit, a compatible sense of humor can sometimes be a rare thing for me to find.

Howie even helped me out tremendously with COCKFIGHT, playing bass and singing backup vocals.

So what does any of this have to do with me, really?

Dear Jane will be appearing as a special  guest of Julian Cheung Chilam at Hitec Hall on March 13. They will play 5 songs; three with Julian and two of their own.

I will be playing second guitar for Dear Jane.

I have no idea why they asked me (that's not self-deprecation; middle-aged and white are simply not common qualities of local pop stars...), but I am immensely grateful and I am looking forward to it with great excitement.

If you have the inclination to attend, I would be very grateful.

I don't get any free tickets, but I ought to mention that Hotcha! is also on the bill.

I knew that would do it.

Hey, you never know what may happen:

"Gweilo assaults female pop trio at Chilam concert, calling them 'inexcusable dimwits'; film at 11..."

  • F@#$ Me, I'm in the HKIFF!!!

    Thursday, Mar 4, 2010 11:05PM / Members only

Thanks to AnD, I met the people who allowed me to be a part of their team for the 48 Hour Film Competition.

Thanks to Yu Yung Yung, I had met Thomas Lo and Koora May Lee and Andrew Lang and Stephanie Fodor.

They let me join them anyway...

Our film, Cocktail Definition, didn't win the 48 Hour competition.

It did win Best Directing, Best Screenplay and Best Acting.

I was lucky, my character was irascible, so I could be myself. And everyone else carried me, because I am not an actor. Unless I'm in court.

So we were invited to be a part of the HKIFF Short Film Competition.

That was already enough to make me feel pretty amazed; ten years ago I daydreamed about being able to attend the HKIFF. Now I'm going to be in it.

But wait, it gets better. I picked up the program last week to start choosing films, and what do I see on p.22 but myself.

The photo is even on the website. In color.

Andrew Lang is an actor. He's supposed to be in the program. He should be proud of himself, and he probably doesn't have the strange feeling I do, as if, for example, I've woken up in a place I don't recognize while wearing a priest's habit with a gun in the pocket, and I have no idea how I got to be in a situation I could never have imagined myself to be in.

But hey, it was the 80s, and cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Being in the HKIFF and its program is almost as odd a feeling as having a former AV star send me emails.

Or having models, actors and musicians whose work I venerate (or simply enjoy) exist as entries in my phone's contact list.

Or having them call or message me.

Or talk to me in public and be seen doing so.

How the f@#$ did I end up in the HKIFF?

What did I do so right?

I was very lucky to work with people who are passionate, professional, and most of all were willing to put up with me and carry me and encourage me.

I'm not being self-deprecating. I'm trying to express what a miracle they performed and how much I owe them and how grateful I am.

They managed to get an un-actor (that's worse than a non-actor) an award for acting.

It's like getting a Boy Scout merit badge for eating Brownies; it just doesn't happen.

I remember the first night (morning), waiting to shoot the first scene: Andrew went off to a quiet place to 'find his character.'

I didn't know what to do. I had no idea how to look for, much less find my character. I didn't even know where my phone was.

    I
sat on a couch firmly convinced that I was going to f@#$ this whole thing up and they'd throw me out of the team and the building at any time.

    Probably from the window, too.

Well, that didn't happen, I didn't f@#$ it up, and somehow I'm in a movie that's in the only film festival in the world that matters to me.

I want to thank my team, and especially Yung Yung, because she convinced me that I could and should do it, and I am very. very grateful.

Please support our film at the HKIFF; info can be found in the link above.

Anything below this line is wholly my responsibility and ought not have any bearing or impact upon the other people involved in this (award-winning, shown-at-HKIFF) film.
    ======================================================
Lest you think that I've suddenly (in middle age) matured, the subject of this entry is not intended to evoke the common British exclamation.

No no, dear reader, I literally mean it; I want someone (female) to f@#$ me
    because I'm in the HKIFF.

My ten minutes of fame are more than long enough for that, even at my age.

Alex Law's Echoes of the Rainbow is showing at HKIFF and will be released to local theatres soon.

I auditioned for a small part in this film, but I didn't get it. I have mixed feelings about missing out on the role.

Part of me is quite sad, because
it would have been great to be involved with a movie I could show my mother.

I edited the subtitles on Shamo, but I wouldn't really ask her to watch it. I edited the subtitles on Sasori too, but I wouldn't even think of letting my mother watch it.

It would have been nice to be in a film that won an award at the Berlin Film Festival. That just sounds good.

Why they named it the Crystal Bear is a mystery. Why I would never call it by that name is not. Getting the Crystal Bear in Berlin sounds like a euphemism. A very uncomfortable euphemism.

So why on earth would I be glad I didn't get the part?

Well, it's based on a realistic concession.

When I auditioned, there was of course no mention of who the other actors would be.

If I had actually gotten the part, and shown up the first day of shooting my role to find myself between Simon Yam Tat Wah and Sandra Ng Kwan Yu...

"Look at the size of that f@#$ing gweilo..."

I'd have frozen up like a deer in the headlights.

    Then I'd have sh*t myself.

So I'm sort of glad that I didn't get it.

But it does motivate me to work a lot harder on my next audition.

I wonder what movies Jo Koo might be in next year...

    HAhAH! Noted, Sean! Great idea.

My uncle once taught me to hold a key no matter where I go. Grab it and ensure that it's secured between the index and middle finger. Jab when needed it's a strong weapon. I wouldn't wanna try it but I guess it'll work. Hmm

LOL You almost had me. I forgot what I was doing and had my cup in my hand. Yeah, I started to realize the limits of my vocabulary. Thankfully, I had my trusty thesaurus.

A walking ice cube with shared straws. I'll pass.

Donuts. Hm. What a concept. Maybe I'll swing by a donut shop and pick up 1 or 2 for the installers. They seem to be doing a good job (but all I see are boards going on the floor in the right direction)...when they're not texting or yakking on their phones.

Yeah I totally get what you mean...honestly to me, I still think he's straight. With an awfully queer sense of fashion. I mean he's had girlfriends (and pretty hot ones, mind you) previously, and I don't think that he's 'suddenly' turned the other way. Nonetheless, it was pretty interesting to see what our other mutual friends thought considering all of us we've known one other for more than a decade.

My mom saw him once...and all he did was get out of the car and say 'hi, aunty!' and got back in. Couple of weeks later she asks me if he's gay. And thing is, he was wearing shades when she saw him. No glimpse of the colored contacts at all! Pretty much shouts out what he looks like huh...

Hey Sean! I had a lot of fun hanging out with you yesterday! I got another trombone joke for you:

How do you know if there's a trombonist at your door?

yes, you're right. People are disappointed when the artist does not wave back... o.O

over here for chinese concerts, the audience does not move. the attitude I get from them is, "I paid loads of money for this ticket, so you better perform for me. I will not get up to clap, dance, or scream." It really bugs the crap out of me.

I have the same thought as you. I always had the thought that you are paying to support an artist but then they do the opposite at the concert... doesn't make sense... o.O

Those are marriages that are between couples who only decided to get married once they were in Vegas already. Not couples who planned to go there for marriage (hypothetically not impulsive).

    You're safe, from me anyway.

Etheridge and Jodie Foster, right? Not sure wth those women were thinking.

You're absolutely right. It's definitely contextual. I can definitely see your mind adding the S so it would make sense to you. By the way, if I dream of David Crosby, I'm coming to HK to beat you up.
